“To be the best, one has to train to beat the best”
These are the words of Peter Tau- middle distance athlete from Mokopane Mahwelereng, Limpopo. Tau developed a love for the track in his grade six year. Being a former sprinter (100m and 200m), Peter transitioned to 400m, 800m and 1500m and ended up at Piet Potgieter. He recalls his most memorable moment on the track being the 800m at SA Championships in Germiston, where he ran an astonishing time of 1:57:86. Not too shabby for a fifteen year old boy. Further more, he has PB’s that most athletes his age can only dream of (800m 1:51:92) (1500m 4:05) (400m 50:04).
Tau wants to come to Pretoria or Johannesburg after school to come and study at TUKS. And we all know who is at TUKS, the coach of Stephen Mokoka, Gladwin Mzazi and many more, Mr Michael Seme.
What inspires such an incredible athlete? Tau is confidant that God, his family and friends support and inspire him to achieve new goals. Of course role model, David Rudisha and coach, Pairre Peens are also responsible for his relentless passion and drive when it comes to Tau’s running career and he also mentions oom Johan du Plessis for having a big influence on his life.
When asked what his goals are Tau doesn’t give us the normal response, he says “My goals are to be the best in what I am good at, to do better than yesterday and to help others achieve their goals”. WOW! These are similar words 5 time USA 800m champ Nick Symmonds has used in the past.
Not too long ago EC held a training camp at Piet Potgieter, and Themba Madima saw Peter Tau at work and had this to say, “Peter is a young man that has a real natural talent for running and he is full of passion and charisma, with the right training and mentoring he has potential to be a great middle distance runner in the future.”
Peter actually loves singing in a church choir every Friday. Can you say man of many talents? He draws his energy from motivating others around him. He is such a positive youngster. Keep up the good work, Peter Tau. You do not only inspire and touch the lives of those around you, but have inspired us as well! Remember… Put your heart, mind, and soul into even your smallest acts. This is the secret of success. May you SOAR in 2015!
