The 20th African Senior Championships had a speedy start in Durban when the continent’s 100m stars battled it out in the heats this morning.

The whole South African contingent, except Alyssa Conley (false start), qualified for the 100m semi-finals this evening. Carina Horn won her heat in an effortless 11.46sec, whilst Tebogo Mamatu secured her spot in the semi-finals with a 11.86sec second position.

Akani Simbine, Gift Leotlela and Thando Roto cruised into tonight’s semis looking ever-so-composed. Simbine clocked 10.27sec to win his heat whilst Leotlela and Roto clocked 10.36sec and 10.47sec finishing second and third respectively.

Cote D’Ivore’s Ta Lou and Ben Youssef ran the fastest times in the heats, clocking 11.35sec and 10.22sec respectively.

Willem Coertzen and Fredriech Pretorius also got off to a great start when they finished first and second in the 100m and Long Jump Decathlon men’s competition.
