Henricho Bruintjies is only one of four South African sprinters who has dipped under the magical 10-second 100m barrier. Since then he has been bothered with many injuries, but still proves to be one of the top sprinters on South African soil. The star has already qualified for the Rio Olympic Games at this year’s national championships, but he has put the nail in the coffin this past weekend when he clocked a blistering 9.89 sec (+4.4 wind) 100m after running a 10.14 in the heats! We had a chat with this top-class athlete:

What is your nickname? “My nickname is #KingB, it is a name that I gave myself, it’s sort of King Bruintjies. I gave myself the nickname to express where I want to be and that is on top, on top!!!”

You surprised everyone by winning nationals, how did you feel? “I surprised a lot of people, but not myself…because I always believe in myself. And I believed that I can win and I wanted to win no matter what”

One thing nobody knows about you? “A lot of people don’t know I am a success-driven person!!! I’m hungry for success and that’s it, that’s who I am”

Where are you originally from? “I’m originally from Cape Town…”

High school attended? “I attended Klein Nederburg Secondary School”

Favourite movie and food? “My favourite movie is Get Rich or Die Trying by 50 Cent and I also love the Notorious BIG film; favourite food in the world is KFC hot wings”

Last thoughts before you settle into the blocks? “I always think about the hard work that I have put in” (The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary)

Who is your role-model and why? “Bryan Habana, because he has achieved everything there is to achieve in rugby and that makes him special”

Biggest moment in your athletic career? “The day I ran 9.97 and broke the South African record”

Bruintjies, the former South African 100m record holder, has a great future ahead of him, but for now, we believe he will do great at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games! Backtrack Sports and the South African athletics family wishes you nothing but the best on your journey champ.
