All three the favorites for the 400m final looked as comfortable as they come in the 400m heats this morning. Van Niekerk was up first in heat 3 and set a mark of 45.26 whilst former World Junior Champ and London silver medalist Luguelin Santos took the 2nd place.

Up next was Leshawn Merrit in heat 5 with the unpredictable Isaac Makwala. Merrit never had any problems and cruised through to a 45.28 victory. Makwala dipped for a 3rd place to qualify with a 45.91.

Kirani James came up in heat 6. He started fairly slow but eased himself into the lead and 300m in was already having a look around and set the fastest qualifier of 44.93.

Now in the semi finals James and Merrit find themselves in the same Semi together with London Silver medalist Luguelin Santos as well as London bronze medalist Lalonde Gordon. Wayde finds himself in a much easier Semi with Babaloki Thebe from Botswana the only major threat. These semi’s take place 20:30 tonight.
