The well-known and versatile Phalula twin-sisters, Lebogang and Diana, will head into Sunday’s Randburg Streetmile as favourites to take the title. However, a very strong field will not hand them the victory on a silver platter. Diana and Lebogang Phalula has been dominating South African athletics (road, track and cross country) for the past ten years and despite facing fierce competition from the likes of Irvette van Zyl, Mapaseka Makhanya and Rene Kalmer, the pair always finds a way of finishing amongst the top three finishers in almost every race on South African soil.

Sunday 4 September 2016, coincidentally, the twins will make their way to the Randburg Streetmile and will be looking for nothing less than the gold and silver positions…but one thing is for sure, their strong opposition will not just give them the victory. They will face fierce competition from the 2016 Gauteng North Athletics 4km cross country champion and strong middle/long distance star Stella Marais, and the multiple South African 800m and 1500m champion Lizerie Ferreira.

The sister of the South African 1500m champion Folavio Sehohle, Thandi Sehohle likes running hard from the shoot of the pistol, thus ensuring a fast-paced race…most definitely playing in the hands of the Phalula sisters and the very talented Murendwa Davhana. Who can forget that epic dual between Davhana, Sehohle and Marne Mentz at the SA u/23 champs in the 1500m, all three these medallists will be in this race.

Anet Coetzee, on the other hand, likes to watch the race from the back of the pack, so she needs to be watched very closely heading into the final stages of the 1609m (1 mile) encounter. The senior women’s Randburg Streetmile will provide quite some drama with the different types of runners lining up on race day. We have the ‘go out hard and catch me if you can’ athletes, the ‘okay, I will wait and let them do the work’ ones and the ‘run for my life’ stars! The question is: “which athletes’ tactics will work at this prestigious mile?” .Come join us on race day and see for yourself.
