The crème de la crème of the country’s long/middle distance track athletes is set to gather in what could be the race of the 2016 South African Cross Country Championships, the men’s 4km. Jerry Motsau (ANW), Marko Buccariza (CGA), Tumisang Monnatlala (CGA), Kgalalelo Mathabatha (CGA), Anthony Timoteus (WPA), Henry Makane (CGA), Siyabonga Derison (AFS) and Rantso Mokopane (ANW) are just a few track stars who can also produce quality, if not world-class cross country performances. These athletes will be joined by many other opponents who can snatch the victory at any given time; let’s have a look at the what might just happen on race day.

The route at the Olympia School of Skills will be very pleasant for especially the track athletes who will take on the serious cross country contenders this weekend. The course is flat with small hills and no sharp turns…probably the best course for any track specialist to take advantage off. Thus, if they get out of the starting blocks like they do on the track, that advantage might just be turned into an easier victory. Or do the non-track specialists have a different view on this? Can anyone start like the fast and in-shape Henry Makane? Can the tactics of Rantso Mokopane, Siyabonga Derison and Jerry Motsau be used against them? Will the power-runner Monnatlala outwit Timoteus’ strength on the day or is this Marko Buccariza’s race for the taking? I bet many athletes will disagree! Because there are rumours, just rumours, that Elroy Gelant might just be a surprise entry in the men’s 4km race…

This race is set to bring the heat to George regardless of who the winner will be. It will be one of the fastest, most exciting and best tactically run race of the championships. A race that should not be missed…so see you there!
