The 2016 Randburg Streetmile and 10km races that took place on Sunday 4 September 2016saw some of the country’s finest long/middle distance athletes gather battle it out over the 1.6km distance as well as a 10km race, nappy dash, doggy mile and many other festivities.

The day organized by Randburg Harriers Athletics Club was a huge success! The Randburg Streetmile and other races that happened on the day turned out to be a huge success. As you entered the Randburg Sport Complex, you were welcomed by the smell of fresh coffee, friendly faces, kids running up and down and of course athletes warming up for their respective races. The gazebos around the field provided a very sporty vibe and the music ensured that the ears and bodies of everyone is ready to ‘jive’ to first position in their different races.

The 10km races were won by Lucky Mohale and Tebogo Masehla whilst all the milers started warming up for their time to shine. The mile series saw the veteran men and women sprint off in the hopes of being crowned the rejuvenated Randburg Streetmile veteran champion and one such athlete, Shadrack Hoff, made his intentions clear. The former South African 5000m record holder won the veteran’s mile in a blistering 4min55min, not bad at all for his age. The day got more exciting when two Olympians, Anel Oosthuizen and

Lebogang Shange and Anel Oosthuizen, took the men’s and women’s race walk mile titles in well under 7min and well under 8min. The junior women and men’s races provided quite the spectacle and was thus a great build up for the main races: the elite men and women’s miles. These races were won by Jerry Motsau and Lebogang Phalula, athletes that need no introduction when it comes to mile or longer distance running. Their winning times of 4min22sec and 5min12sec was good to secure victories over Marko Bucarizza (second) and Rynardt Van Rensburg (third) and Lebo Phalula (second) and Stella Marais (third).

The Randburg Streetmile and races was a huge success and it can only get better from here.

Thank you for going the ‘extra mile’ Randburg Harriers, we look forward to many more great races.

The videos of the races will be on the Backtrack website between 6-7 September
